On 3 mars, 2023, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director Hope Muir promoted Spencer Hack to Principal Dancer on stage following his performance in the Canadian premiere of David Dawson’s Anima Animus, adding considerably to the evening’s excitement. Spencer is a soulful and versatile performer, deeply respected by his peers and growing continually as an artist. Born in Toledo, Ohio and trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, he joined the company as an RBC Apprentice in 2014. We asked Spencer to take us back to the moment of his promotion and reflect on his ambitions for the future.

Your promotion to Principal Dancer was unforgettable, with Hope Muir surprising everyone with this wonderful news onstage. Did you have any idea what was coming?

I had no idea it was coming. I was very surprised. It was such a surreal moment and I remember not having any idea what to do. Luckily First Soloist Jeannine Haller, who was standing right next to me, pushed me forward to bow, otherwise I probably would have just stood there.

What was the reaction from your family, friends and colleagues?

Everyone has been so supportive. I called my parents right after it happened and they were so happy. I’ve felt surrounded by so much love from everyone in the company and from lots of friends around the world. I am so grateful.

What does the title of “Principal Dancer” mean to you?

I’m still figuring that out, but I think my ambitions as an artist remain the same as they were before the promotion. I hope I’m someone that inspires other people to work hard and stay true to themselves.

Your promotion was a welcome surprise for everyone in the theatre that night. However, your promotion itself is not a surprise. Your artistry has developed consistently in your time with the company. What are you most proud of recently?

I think I’m most proud of my personal growth this past season. I feel like I’ve gotten to a place where I’ve started to truly own my dancing. I’ve started to trust my instincts as a dancer and performer more than I ever have and that feels really good. Of course, the journey is ongoing and full of challenges, but I’m happy with where I am at.

What do you hope to accomplish next as an artist?

My biggest hope is to keep growing, keep learning, keep expanding. I think a successful career as an artist is one where the learning and questioning never stop, so that is what I wish for the future.
